Alternative medicine, which includes myriad alternative therapies, is a healthcare approach that is outside of conventional Western medicine. If used alongside conventional medicine, the terms complementary therapies/complementary medicine are used instead. Integrative medicine and functional medicine are additional terms that refer to a healthcare approach that purposely coordinates conventional and alternative modalities to look for and to treat the root cause of a health issue. Integrative medicine takes a holistic approach and look at the whole person for healing: the physical, mental, emotional, energetic, spiritual & social.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that about 1 in 4 US adults currently use alternative medicine. They also report that its usage is higher among women and among those with higher levels of education. When you know better, you do better!
